Nepal Floods: Here's Why Ajay Devgn, Manisha Koirala And Sonu Sood's Hearts Beat For Neighbouring Country

Sonu Sood boarded a flight from Mumbai to Kathmandu at 11 am, accompanied by his Nepalese chauffeur and lieutenant of two decades, Chaudhary. Speaking to The Free Press Journal, the actor said, “Over the next two days, I am scheduled to visit around 5-6 areas that are among the worst-hit by the devastating floods. Chaudhary, who is my chauffeur and almost a family member now, is Nepali. Almost in tears, he has been updating me continuously on the grim situation there.”

August 26—when disaster struck

Exactly a week ago, disaster struck the border areas around Nepal and Tibet. Catastrophe struck when debris and water flooded those areas, triggered by rapid slope failure involving a glacier melting in Langtang National Park, Nepal, near the Chinese border. This went downstream, flooding the Lhende Khola and Trishuli Khola rivers on the Nepal-Tibet border. A rough estimate shows that around 4,000 people of different nationalities have gone missing. The grim news is that at least a thousand lives were lost, and the death toll is steadily climbing. Several Indians, too, who undertook the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, are still to be accounted for.

Amenities despatched earlier

Sood informed us that his foundation had already shipped out over 2,000 blankets, food supplies, medicines and other relief material before his journey. “I am travelling now to personally see what else needs to be done from my side. On my return to Mumbai, I will be better-equipped to send out more relief supplies,” Sonu said. He added that besides Chaudhary, one of his cooks, Bharat, is also from Nepal. “It is because of them that I feel so deeply connected with Nepal,” he said.

Manisha makes a heartfelt appeal

In the meanwhile, Manisha Koirala, who is from Nepal, is traumatised by the crisis that has hit her country. From her home in Kathmandu, she is also keeping herself continuously updated on rescue work in the affected parts. Besides volunteering help through local groups, Manisha has been constantly posting her gratefulness to the Nepalese Army, rescue workers, volunteers and general public who are on ground zero. And she has appealed to foreigners to keep visiting her country.

“Tourism is our lifeline,” said Koirala. “My country is very beautiful and we love and respect our tourists. Just because of some disasters like this unfortunate one, I don’t want people to stop visiting Nepal. We have always emerged strong.”

Ajay, also concerned by the current Nepal crisis

A source says that Bollywood superstar-filmmaker Ajay Devgn is also apprised of the Nepal disaster situation from within his home. “From August 26 right up to now, he is fully aware of everything that is playing out in the affected areas,” added the source. It is a known fact that Devgn has a deep connect with the Himalayan Kingdom because, for over three decades now, his house and office have been run by a trusted lot of Nepalese. From his driver to cook; from his major domo to foot-soldiers, many are from Nepal. Though the actor refuses to talk about it, the source confirmed that Devgn too has “sent money-aid and requisite help” through his people.
