During an interaction with Pinkvilla, a fan gushed about how Bhool Bhulaiyaa was a "cult movie", and that he did not watch the second and third films of the franchise as Akshay was not a part of them. "Why did you not continue the franchise, sir?" the fan asked.
As the audience cheered, Akshay responded, "Beta, mujhe nikaal diya tha. That's it." The actor refused to comment further on the topic.
The original Bhool Bhulaiyaa released in 2007, starring Akshay as psychiatist Aditya and Vidya Balan as Manjulika. The film went on to be a blockbuster at the box office and achieved a cult status over the years.

In 2022, the franchise returned with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, however, Akshay was replaced by Kartik Aaryan. The film shattered all records at the box office, making it Kartik's biggest hit till date.
In 2024, Kartik revived his role of Ruhan for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and the film was again a box office hit. During an interview, Kartik had opened up on replacing Akshay. "I have always been a huge fan of Akshay. I don’t see myself on the same level as him. I’ve watched him since I was a child, so it feels a bit strange to be compared to him," he had said.
