New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort, announced a major push for nuclear power in India. He said that work is moving fast on 10 new nuclear reactors. The government’s goal is to increase nuclear power capacity by ten times by the year 2047, when India will celebrate 100 years of independence.
The Prime Minister stressed that this step is crucial for meeting the country’s future energy needs while also reducing dependence on imported fuels like petrol, diesel, and natural gas. India currently spends billions of rupees every year to buy these fuels from other countries.

Modi said India must become self-reliant in the energy sector. With nuclear energy, the country can produce large amounts of clean electricity without relying on imports. “We are bringing major reforms in the nuclear sector to make this happen,” he said.
He pointed out that in the last 11 years, India’s solar power capacity has grown 30 times. The government is also building new dams to generate more hydropower, ensuring clean and sustainable energy for the future.
Focus on Clean Energy Mix
Along with nuclear, solar, and hydropower, the Prime Minister highlighted the National Hydrogen Mission. The government is investing thousands of crores of rupees in this project, which aims to produce clean hydrogen fuel that can power industries and vehicles without polluting the environment.
He said these steps will not only strengthen India’s energy security but also help fight climate change and create new opportunities in the green energy sector.
