Woman Hangs Herself With 2-Year-Old Daughter After In-Laws Refuse Her To Visit 'Mayka' In MP's Katni

Katni (Madhya Pradesh): A 25-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter were found hanging in their home in Madhya Pradesh's Katni on Saturday. The woman killed herself, along with her toddler, after the in-laws denied her permission to visit 'mayka', her maternal home.

The woman named Sumitra, and her two-year-old daughter were found hanging in their home in Pathrehata village, under Barhi police station in Katni district, after her in-laws refused to let her visit her maternal home.

According to Barhi police station in-charge Shailendra Yadav, Sumitra had recently returned to her in-laws’ house from her maternal home. Her sisters had invited her to visit again, but when she asked for permission, her in-laws refused.

On March 7, when her family members were away—some working at a brick kiln and her sister-in-law attending an exam—Sumitra was alone at home with her daughter.

Between 2 PM and 4 PM, she used a saree to hang her child first and then ended her own life.

Her sister-in-law returned home after the exam and was shocked to find them hanging. She immediately informed the family and villagers, causing panic in the village.

Sumitra’s father, Fattu Kol, has alleged that she was murdered by her in-laws, but police suspect it to be a case of suicide due to distress over being denied permission to visit her maternal home.

The police have taken the bodies for investigation and are looking into all aspects of the case.
