Wells, Pumps Run Dry As Water Level Plummets In Several Areas, Groundwater Measurement Reveals Drastic Decline | FPJ
Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): Water levels in Ghatigaon area have plummeted, leading to a shortage of water. According to the latest report from the Groundwater Department, groundwater levels have dropped by 15 to 20 feet, leaving wells dry and head pumps malfunctioning.
This alarming trend is affecting both urban and rural areas, with area experiencing conditions akin to May in April. Groundwater measurements from nine villages reveal a drastic decline, with Dhooan witnessing a drop of 15 metres and Barai exceeding 20 metres.
The situation in Patai village is dire, as its well has completely dried up. The Barai dam, once a critical water source, is now eerily dry. Despite last year’s good rainfall boosting levels in surrounding blocks, area remains in a critical state.
Collector Ruchika Chauhan has convened a meeting to address this pressing issue, as the lack of effective rainwater harvesting and uncontrolled groundwater exploitation have been pressing issue.
For residents in rural parts, water crisis is becoming acute with every passing year. In summer this year, people are already reeling under the impact of water scarcity.
This is forcing families to send children to distant places to get water. The fall in groundwater level is the biggest cause of concern in the region.
