Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Delhi MP-MLA Court, on Thursday, ordered a 3-year jail term for Datia Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti over a decades-old fraud case linked to the Land Development Bank.
With the latest order, Bharti will lose his position as an MLA. According to reports, he will now contest the conviction order in the High Court.
Notably, the special court convicted MLA Bharti under Section 420 of the IPC on Wednesday, stating it would announce the punishment the next day.
The case dates back approximately 25 years, when Rajendra Bharti was appointed as the chairman of the District Cooperative Agricultural and Rural Bank, Datia. He opened a fixed deposit of ₹10 lakh in his mother Savitri Devi's name for three years. The annual interest rate offered back then was 13.5%.
It is alleged that Bharti violated the rules and withdrew the interest amount on the FD every year for years. The bank rules allow that the principal amount and interest can be withdrawn only after the maturity period, which is 3 years in this case.
