Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): After Chief Minister Mohan Yadav cleared the way for police promotions on March 7, the administrative branch of the Police Headquarters (PHQ) has swung into action.
Police personnel across Madhya Pradesh are now hopeful of receiving permanent postings, which would finally remove the ‘in-charge’ or acting tag from their designations.
The promotion process, which had remained stalled for nearly eight years, is now being revived. Officers from the ranks of head constable to deputy superintendent of police (DSP), who were holding higher posts on an acting basis since 2021, are likely to benefit from this long-pending move.
In 2021, the then Chief Minister had implemented a policy under which police personnel were assigned duties of higher posts without formal promotions. Officers were given the charge of vacant posts, such as Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Sub-Inspector (SI), Inspector, and DSP, under certain conditions. However, these appointments were only temporary, and the officers continued to work in an "acting" capacity.

Thousands of such officers across the state have since been serving without confirmation in their promoted roles.
Now, the PHQ is preparing a detailed list of all such officers and verifying their service records. Once the promotion formula receives formal approval from the cabinet, PHQ will remove the ‘acting’ tag and send a proposal for regular promotions to DGP.
