Morena (Madhya Pradesh): Congress MLA Pankaj Upadhyay launched a Jal Satyagraha on National Highway 552, due to persistent waterlogging and a severe water crisis.
He demanded urgent relief for hundreds of villagers and city dwellers suffering from influx of dirty water into their homes and shops following recent rains.
Joined by workers from various political parties, including the CPI (M), he sat in the polluted water for approximately three hours, drawing attention to the dire conditions faced by residents.
The protest was sparked by severe waterlogging affecting a stretch of about one and a half kilometres from the canal of National Highway 552 to Subhash School in Kailaras Tehsil.
Residents reported that dirty drainage water from nearby drains mixed with rainwater was creating an unbearable stench and flooding their properties.
Many shopkeepers and homeowners expressed frustration, stating that the situation has led to significant financial losses and health risks due to potential infections from contaminated water.
During the protest, local administration and police officials assured him and the demonstrators that a plan was being developed to address the drainage issues through urban bodies and gram panchayats.
However, Upadhyay said that if a permanent solution is not implemented, he will continue to protest. “A foul smell emanates from the water around houses, indicating possible contamination with sewage water.” lamented residents. The Satyagraha concluded after assurances from the administration.
