Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A couple succumbed to their burn injuries while undergoing treatment at Hamidia Hospital on Sunday morning. It is alleged that the husband had set his wife on fire and them immolated self after a scuffle on June 9 under Itkhedi police station limits.
They were rescued and admitted to the hospital by other family members. Bodies have been handed over to the family after post-mortem and a case has been registered, police said.
According to reports, resident of Arwalia village Deepak Mahra’s (45) was addicted to alcohol and suspected that his wife has an affair with another man.
His wife Radhika (42) had returned to her parent’s home after tiff with her husband some days ago with their children aged 15 and 12 years. Deepak tried to convince his wife to return home but she refused. Radhika’s kin informed that on June 9, Deepak came to take Radhika with him but she refused again. Deepak then stayed back at his in-laws house.
During the night, Deepak poured kerosene on Radhika and her younger brother Lalu while they were asleep. He set Radhika on fire while Lalu escaped from the room. Deepak then set himself afire as well.
Sub Inspector at Itkhedi police station Vijay Singh said the statement of the couple could not be recorded as they were in a critical condition and were unable to speak during the treatment. Statements of the other family members will soon be recorded, he added.
