US Midterm Elections 2026: Final Polls Predicted Democratic Wave As Party Makes Early Gains In House, Senate
Final pre-election polls had projected significant Democratic gains in the November 3 US midterm elections, with the party holding an 8-point lead in the national congressional ballot. Low approval ratings for President Donald Trump, economic dissatisfaction and rising cost-of-living concerns shaped voter sentiment. Early results on November 4 indicated Democratic gains in key congressional races.

Washington: The final polls ahead of the November 3, 2026, US midterm elections had pointed towards a strong performance by the Democratic Party, with surveys consistently showing it holding a substantial lead over Republicans in the national congressional ballot. Early election results on Wednesday, November 4, have indicated Democratic gains in both chambers of Congress, although the final balance of power remains uncertain as counting continues.
The ElectionsUSA final generic congressional ballot average, based on 119 polls conducted through November 2, gave Democrats 50.8% support against 42.8% for Republicans, translating into an eight-point advantage. Other polling trackers, including Silver Bulletin, had also placed the Democratic lead between eight and nine points.
The generic congressional ballot measures voters' preferences for Democratic or Republican candidates in their respective House districts. While it does not directly predict the number of seats either party will win, it is considered an important indicator of the national political environment.
Democrats Maintained Strong Lead In Final Polls
Several late-October surveys reinforced the Democratic advantage. An Emerson College poll conducted between October 24 and 26 showed Democrats leading Republicans 52% to 42%. A YouGov survey placed the Democratic lead at nine points, while the NBC/Hart Research Associates-Public Opinion Strategies poll conducted between October 28 and 30 showed Democrats ahead 52% to 45%.
The Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted between October 29 and November 2 also found Democrats leading 52% to 44% among likely voters. The same survey put Trump's approval rating at 32%, close to his lowest rating during his presidency.
The Democratic advantage remained relatively consistent in the final weeks of campaigning, with economic dissatisfaction, inflation and the rising cost of living emerging as major concerns among voters.
Trump's Approval Ratings Weighed On Republicans
President Donald Trump's approval ratings emerged as another significant factor ahead of the midterms. Several late-cycle surveys showed his approval hovering in the high 30s or lower, with disapproval considerably higher.
The Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 78% of respondents considered the cost of living a very important or top voting issue. Democrats also held an advantage over Republicans on economic concerns, with 43% trusting Democrats compared with 32% who favoured Republicans on the issue.
The findings suggested that dissatisfaction with the economy and the administration's performance could translate into an electoral setback for Republicans, who were defending their congressional majorities
Senate Control Remained A Key Battleground
The Senate presented a more complicated electoral challenge for Democrats. Republicans entered the elections with a 53-47 majority, meaning Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to secure control, assuming JD Vance would break a 50-50 tie.
Final polling indicated competitive races across several Republican-held and open seats, including Michigan, Maine, Texas, Ohio, Kansas, Alaska and Iowa.
Silver Bulletin's final election forecast, updated on November 3, showed Democratic candidates leading in major battleground states, including Texas, Ohio, Michigan, Maine and Iowa. The forecast suggested that Democrats had a strong opportunity to capture the Senate, although the outcome remained dependent on individual state races.
Early results have strengthened the party's position. Democratic candidate Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley in North Carolina, while Annie Andrews won the South Carolina Senate race. Democrats also held their seats in Georgia and secured New Hampshire's open seat, putting them closer to the four-seat net gain required for a Senate majority.
House Democrats Expected To Make Significant Gains
The House of Representatives was widely considered the Democrats' strongest opportunity to regain control of Congress.
Polling averages showed Democrats with an eight-point national advantage in the generic congressional ballot. Several election models had consequently placed their chances of winning the House at more than 90%, with projections indicating potential net gains of 15 to 30 or more seats.
Silver Bulletin's final forecast described a Democratic House majority as highly likely. Early election-night projections also indicated that Democrats were on track to take control of the chamber after gaining several Republican-held seats. However, the final seat count remained uncertain as votes continued to be counted across the country.
What Could The Results Mean For Trump?
The midterm elections are widely viewed as a referendum on the sitting president's performance, even though Trump was not personally on the ballot.

A Democratic takeover of either chamber could significantly complicate the administration's legislative agenda. Control of the House would give Democrats greater authority over congressional investigations and oversight, while a Senate majority would give the party greater influence over legislation, Cabinet confirmations and judicial appointments.
With Republicans facing challenges over economic dissatisfaction and Trump's approval ratings, the election results could shape the political landscape for the remainder of his presidency.
However, the final outcome will depend on the remaining vote count, particularly in closely contested Senate races and House districts.
