An Indian woman’s holiday in Japan took an unexpected turn when she realised she had lost a purse containing cash, house keys and an expensive microphone. Expecting the worst, she went to a police station to report it missing. Instead, she was stunned to learn that a stranger had already found and returned it.
Purse left behind in bicycle basket
Sonam Midha recently shared the incident on Instagram, describing how she had gone to a restaurant with a friend while riding a rented bicycle.
Before entering the restaurant, Midha placed her purse in the bicycle’s basket. After spending nearly an hour inside, she and her friend returned to the bicycle. It was only then that she noticed the purse was no longer there.
“I almost lost 1 lakh rupees today,” she said while recalling the incident.
The two searched around the bicycle and the nearby area, hoping they would find the missing bag. However, there was no sign of it.
She expected her belongings to be gone
The purse contained cash, her house keys and a costly microphone, making the situation even more stressful. Midha eventually assumed that someone might have taken it and decided to report the matter at a nearby police station.
But the response from the officers left her surprised.
After she explained what the purse looked like and listed the items inside, the police told her that a similar purse had been handed over to them only a short while earlier.
“When I told them all the things, they said that they had a purse kept with them that someone had just turned in. So when I looked, it was actually my purse,” she said.

Midha discovered that her belongings were still safely inside the purse. The person who found it had apparently handed it over without taking the cash or any of the other items.
The unexpected act of honesty left her emotional. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “I wanted to cry, like, such nice people! People here are so kind, and humanity still exists here. And thank you, Japan.”
She later shared another message with the video, writing, “Visiting the Police station and seeing an officer expecting my arrival was not on my bingo card of this year. Love you Japan.”
