Achieving hat trick of titles is no easy job for any athlete, however defending Mumbai Marathon champion Lemi Berhanu Hayle has already set his sights on retaining the crown. Berhanu, who is eyeing a hat-trick of titles after back-to-back wins in 2023 and 2024, would make him the first runner to achieve the honour in the history of the race.
Previously Kenya's John Kelai, winner in 2007 and 2008, made an attempt earlier but managed a third place in 2009. Speaking at the press conference in Mumbai on Thursday, Lemi expressed confidence on retaining the title and etching his name in the history books. He said, "I know the course and my preparation has been going very well."
When being asked about the reason behind his success, Lemi said, “My preparation for the Mumbai Marathon has been excellent, especially after Beijing. I’ve been focused on training and am aiming for my third win this Sunday. I have good experience with this course, and I believe my preparation gives me an advantage.
I always listen to my coach and manager, following their program without deviation. Their guidance and my patience have been key to my progress. I’ve waited a long time for this moment, and I’m confident in delivering a strong performance on Sunday.”
Ethiopian runners have been dominating the marathon circuit, while Indian athletes have been unable to match the standards. When been asked about the tops that he would like to give Indian athletes for matching elite standards, Lemi said, proper nutrition, good sleep and right preparation will help them achieve the the standards set by them in future”.
