A pre‑World Cup international friendly between Spain national football team and Egypt national football team in Barcelona on March 31 was overshadowed by discriminatory chants from some supporters that drew widespread criticism from fans and officials alike.

The game, held at Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium, finished in a goalless draw, but did not go without controversy. Ahead of kickoff, parts of the crowd loudly whistled during Egypt’s national anthem, and during the match a section of supporters reportedly chanted a phrase translated as “If you don’t jump, you’re a Muslim.” The chant, directed at religion rather than a rival team, was widely condemned as offensive.

The incident has sparked debate about fan culture and inclusivity in football, particularly as both teams use these matches as preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
