The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) on Monday led a massive protest at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), demanding the cancellation of the newly implemented examination pattern and a re-examination for affected students.
Hundreds of third-year students from various colleges and streams gathered at the university campus, expressing strong opposition to the sudden change in the exam structure introduced by the university for the current academic year.
Protesters alleged that the new exam format was imposed without adequate consultation or preparation, creating confusion and academic pressure among students. “The sudden shift has disrupted our studies and evaluation. We demand immediate rollback and re-exams under the old pattern,” said one of the protesting students.
"For a 50-mark paper, a student is eligible for only 10% grace, which means five marks. But in one case, a student who originally scored nine marks was given 20 marks after adding grace marks, an increase of 11 marks. This is completely unfair and irregular. Such discrepancies in the exam department's functioning are affecting students’ futures," said another student present at the protest.
NSUI leaders accused the university of not listening to the issues of the students, and the students warned of intensified agitation if the demands are not met.
Meanwhile, The Free Press Journal tried to contact Dr Jyoti Bhakare, Registrar of SPPU, but did not receive a response
