Pune: In a remarkable life-saving intervention, doctors at Sassoon General Hospital successfully removed a stone lodged in the airway of a one-year-old child, saving his life.

According to hospital officials, the incident occurred when the child accidentally swallowed small pieces of stone while playing two days before being brought to the hospital. Initially, the parents consulted a local doctor and were reassured that the stone would pass naturally. However, the following day, the child began experiencing intermittent bouts of coughing, prompting the parents to rush the child to Sassoon Hospital.

At the ENT department, the medical team led by Prof. Dr Rahul Telang examined the child. An X-ray revealed a radio-opaque foreign body lodged at the bifurcation of the trachea, extending up to the carina and into the right main bronchus. Doctors noted that such foreign objects can pose serious risks, including airway obstruction and tissue damage, if not removed promptly.

Considering the severity of the condition, the team immediately performed an emergency rigid bronchoscopy. During the procedure, the doctors carefully located and successfully removed the stone from the child’s airway.

The surgery was conducted under the guidance of Dean Dr Eknath Pawar and Medical Superintendent Yallappa Jadhav. The procedure was led by Prof. Dr Rahul Telang, Head of the ENT Department at BJ Government Medical College, with support from anesthetist Dr Prajakta and her team.

The child is now in stable and satisfactory condition, hospital authorities confirmed.
