‘A Leader Beyond Politics’: Politicians React To Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s Death In Baramati, Pune | Sourced

Pune: The entire country was shocked by the news of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s untimely death in a private plane crash following a landing mishap in Pune’s Baramati area. Pawar was an influential figure in Maharashtra politics and played a significant role in the development of the state, particularly in the Pune district.

Having handled major portfolios such as finance, irrigation, cooperation, and other key sectors, his loss is deeply significant for the state and its people, many of whom were closely attached to their beloved “Dada”. Several local politicians worked closely with him over the years, reflecting the breadth and diversity of his political career. Since Wednesday, leaders from across the political spectrum have expressed grief and shared their reactions to Ajit Pawar’s demise.

Leaders across party lines reacted to the death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, describing him as a decisive administrator, a people-orientated leader, and a towering figure in Maharashtra’s political and governance landscape.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol said, “During my tenure as Pune mayor, I developed a close working relationship with Ajitdada. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, he set aside party lines and remained in constant communication about Pune’s situation. He told me about the necessary measures and the decision-making process. He took me into confidence on several crucial issues.”

Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol said, “Ajitdada was a leader who carved a unique identity for himself in Maharashtra politics over four decades and was known as a public representative with a strong grip on administration.”

Mohol further said, “There were very few leaders in Maharashtra politics who commanded respect across party lines and ruled the hearts of workers from all parties -- that leadership and guiding presence was Ajitdada.”

Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil said, “After becoming Deputy Chief Minister, I closely observed Ajit Pawar’s unique working style -- his incredible speed of work, firm grip on administration, deep study of every subject, and ability to take difficult decisions were truly extraordinary.”

Patil further said, “Behind his stern and disciplined image was a sharp sense of humour, and even while reprimanding someone, he could suddenly say something so witty that it lightened the atmosphere.”

BJP Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge said, “Ajitdada was a dynamic and people-orientated leader with complete command over his work, who began addressing public issues early in the morning and worked relentlessly for the development of Maharashtra.”

It's important to note that less than a fortnight ago, when Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) elections were taking place, Mohol Patil and Landge all had locked horns with Pawar, and the arguments were harsh; however, after the death, they came ahead and paid their respects, showing that some things are beyond politics.

NCP-SP Shirur MP Amol Kolhe said, “Many may have found Ajitdada’s nature strict, but behind that firmness was a deep concern for Maharashtra’s welfare, and the public believed that once he gave his word, the work would surely be completed.”

After the NCP split in 2023, MP Kolhe stayed with Sharad Pawar despite Ajit Pawar’s push for him to join his faction. In the two elections that have taken place since then, Dr Kolhe and Ajit Pawar both criticised each other heavily, but all that is left now is respect and memories.

Shiv Sena’s Maval MP Shrirang Barne said, “I had the opportunity to work alongside Ajitdada in politics. His straightforward nature and his firm, uncompromising stand on issues are qualities that will always be remembered.”

Deputy Chairperson of Maharashtra Legislative Council Dr Neelam Gorhe said, "Due to his clear vision, fearless words, and firm grip on administration, Ajit Dada earned a place not just in politics, but in the hearts of the common man. The decisiveness and work discipline hidden behind his witty nature will always be remembered. With his passing, Maharashtra has lost a resolute voice.

Meanwhile, the Pawar family is yet to issue any statement on the incident. The magnitude of the loss they have suffered is evident, which may explain why no family member has made a public comment so far.
