23rd Balgandharva Sangeet Mahotsav: Classical Music In Films Must Return, Say Bhat Sisters |
The decline of classical music in films is a worrying trend, and efforts are needed to revive it, said Bengaluru-based classical singers Reshma Bhat and Ramaiya Bhat during the Balgandharva Sangeet Mahotsav on Friday. Reintroducing classical music in films can spark interest among the younger generation, emphasised the Bhat sisters, who hail from the Kirana Gharana in Karnataka.
Speaking about Maharashtra’s classical music culture, they noted that events in cities like Pune and Jalgaon create an encouraging environment for budding musicians. “Earlier, film music often had classical elements, which made the songs memorable. Today, this is missing. Music directors need to reintroduce classical elements in film music,” they added.

Reflecting on Balgandharva’s connection to Jalgaon, the sisters expressed their joy in performing in the city where the legendary musician spent his childhood. The interaction was attended by Vasantrao Chandorkar Foundation’s Executive Trustee Deepak Chandorkar, Trustee Deepika Chandorkar and Aparna Bhat.
