In India, cases related to dowry show considerable differences among states, with Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra having the highest occurrences. Importantly, these figures indicate reported incidents instead of the complete frequency of dowry customs. Specific North-East Indian states such as Assam and Meghalaya are traditionally acknowledged as areas without dowry.

Uttar Pradesh regularly tops the dowry death statistics, recording more than two thousand deaths in 2022. Bihar and Maharashtra likewise indicate significant figures, with numerous cases still awaiting judicial examination. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have a significant number of unresolved cases awaiting resolution.
Other states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh record a substantial number of deaths and cases filed under the Dowry Prohibition Act. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the reported cases are fewer compared to other southern states.
In 2022, the NCRB documented 6,450 dowry-related fatalities, mainly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Despite the existence of the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961, dowry practices persist due to patriarchal views and economic exploitation. Victims frequently endure psychological and physical damage, resulting in suicides or homicides.
Challenges involve sluggish inquiries and diminished conviction rates, whereas legal actions seek to tackle these problems. Judicial actions underscore the need for social transformation, stressing the importance of enforcement, community consciousness, and empowering women to address dowry-related violence.
