Navi Mumbai: Kharghar resident loses Rs 1.5 lakh to cyber fraudster while trying to update Aadhar card

A 36-year-old Kharghar resident lost Rs 1.5 lakh to a cyber fraudster while trying to update his Aadhar details. The victim had installed an app on his mobile as per the instruction of the fraudster to complete the transaction to pay Rs 25 service charge for the Aadhar update. However, the fraudster made a total of 14 illegal transactions and transferred Rs 1.5 lakh from the victim’s bank account.

As per the complainant, on July 2, 2022, he searched the contact number of the Aadhar office to update his mobile number linked with his Aadhar. He found a mobile number in one of the websites in Google search and he tried to contact that number but there was no response.

Later, he received a call from the same number and the caller told him that he was messaging a link to update his Aadhar details. The complainant received a message with a link immediately. According to police, the victim provided all the details and while submitting, he was asked to pay Rs 25 mandatory service charge for Aadhar update.

According to the police, despite providing all bank details to make the payment, the complainant did not receive the OTP from the bank. Later the complainant connected to the caller again and following his suggestion, he downloaded a mobile application QuickSupport. Soon after he downloaded the app, the cyber fraudster made a total of 14 illegal transactions and transferred Rs 1,50,302 from the complainant’s bank account. The complainant realised his mistake and uninstalled the app immediately. Later, he approached the Kharghar police and registered a case.

Kharghar police registered a case of cheating under section 420 of IPC and sections 66 A, 66 C and 66 D of the IT Act.
