Navi Mumbai: In order to facilitate early screening in ovarian cancer, which is often referred to as the “silent killer,” Apollo Cancer Centres (ACCs) has launched ‘End-O Check’, a specialised early detection initiative focused on identifying ovarian and endometrial cancers in women aged 45 and above.
Early Detection Saves Lives
The program aims to reach high-risk women—especially those who are postmenopausal—through a combination of risk-based assessments, diagnostic testing, and symptom evaluation. Ovarian cancer commonly affects women between the ages of 55 and 64, with the average age of diagnosis at 63. However, when detected in its early stages, the five-year survival rate can exceed 90%.
Rising Cancer Burden
With India projected to reach 1.57 million cancer cases by 2025, both ovarian and uterine cancers continue to be among the top five cancers affecting Indian women. The incidence rate for ovarian cancer stands at 4.6 per 100,000 women, while that for uterine (corpus) cancer is 2.5 per 100,000. Factors such as delayed childbirth, lifestyle-related metabolic conditions, obesity, early menstruation, late menopause, and PCOS are contributing to the increasing risk.
“Early detection remains our most powerful ally in improving survival and quality of life in cancer care,” said Mr. Dinesh Madhavan, President – Group Oncology and International, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. “With End-O Check, we are shifting the focus from treatment to early screening, enabling timely detection and precision-led care by our cancer management teams.”
Empowering Women
Dr. Richa Bansal, Consultant in Gynec Oncology and Robotic Surgery at Apollo Cancer Centres, Mumbai, emphasized that the rise in endometrial cancer among women above 45 makes early screening vital. “Global data shows that the five-year survival rate is around 96% if the cancer is detected in its localized stage, but this drops significantly if detection is delayed.”
Tech-Driven Diagnosis
Meanwhile, Dr. Bindhu K.S., Senior Consultant, Department of OB-GYN and Robotic Surgery at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, added that radiology will play a key role. “We’re integrating transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) into End-O Check to identify subtle signs of ovarian or endometrial cancers early. This allows for timely intervention and better patient outcomes.”
Dr. Anil D’Cruz, Director of Oncology and Senior Head and Neck Onco Surgeon at Apollo Cancer Centres, said, “End-O Check is part of our broader preventive oncology effort. It’s about raising sustained awareness, empowering women to act early, and ensuring equitable access to reliable cancer screening tools. Early detection not only saves lives—it leads to more effective and less invasive treatments.”
Dr Himani Sharma, senior consultant OB-GYN and Robotic Surgery emphasised that while cervical cancer too is a concern among the women, the risk factors are different in Cervical as compared to Ovarian and Endometrial cancers.
"While Cervical cancer has a test -PAP smear- to diagnose, ovarian and Endometrial cancers are diagnosed using a combination of tests as per the symptoms."
