Mumbai: A 24-year-old woman, who had come to the city to meet her boyfriend, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in a hotel in Santacruz East on Tuesday.
Originally from Bihar, the deceased, identified as Ishani Kumari, was pursuing B Tech in Madhya Pradesh, said the Vakola police. No suicide note was found at the spot hence what drove her to the brink is not clear, they added.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Kumari's mother had recently passed away, which deeply shocked her and pushed her into depression. Before allegedly taking the extreme step, she had made a last call to her brother, telling him that she was going to meet their mother, said a police officer.
The officials did not confirm whether she met her boyfriend or not. However, he will be questioned, while statements of the deceased's family will also be recorded.
According to the police, Kumari had arrived in Mumbai a few days ago and was staying at Bombay House Apartment in Vakola. On Tuesday, around noon, she was supposed to check out, but failed to do so. When the hotel staff tried calling her phone, they received no response.
After waiting for about an hour, the staff knocked on her door at around 1pm, but there was still no answer. They then informed the police and the fire brigade. Upon breaking open the door, Kumari was found hanging from the ceiling fan, said the police.
She was immediately rushed to VN Desai Hospital where she was declared dead. Unaware of the happening, Kumari's brother had come to Mumbai in search of her. Subsequently, he came to know about the tragedy. The police have registered an accidental death report.
