Although the ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road project is set to open fully for traffic in January 2025, the installation of speed detection cameras along the route is expected to complete by May 2025. The new system aims to curb overspeeding as well as allowing traffic police to take enforcement action against speeding and other traffic violations. The proposal to install around 70 advanced cameras on critical locations is awaiting administrative approval.

Currently, there are 154 cameras inside the Coastal Road tunnels, including video incident detection cameras and pan-tilt-zoom cameras, which monitor vehicle movements. The road already has a speed limit signs of 80 km/h on open sections and 60 km/h inside the tunnels. Following request from the Mumbai traffic police, the civic authorities had prepared a proposal to install speed detection cameras to enforce these speed limits. The installation was expected to be complete by end of December.

"The existing tunnel cameras on the Coastal Road currently can only track vehicle movement and do not have the capability to penalise speed violations. However, the new speed detection cameras, once installed, will automatically capture the registration numbers of speeding vehicles, and an e-challan will be sent directly to the driver's mobile phone. Installation of these cameras was not in our initial plan, but it has been included recently after receiving a request from the traffic police. Once the proposal is approved, the installation work will start immediately and will be completed by May 2025," said a senior civic official.

South Mumbai residents have recently expressed concerns that motorists and bikers have turned the stretch between the tunnel exit and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link into a racing track. "Motorists often overspeed due to the absence of speed detection cameras, creating a higher risk of accidents in the area. The lack of these cameras has allowed this dangerous behavior to continue unhindered, further exacerbating safety risks," said Kumar Verma, a resident and Director at Biztory Solutions. Sources have stated that the additional speed detection cameras will be installed at critical locations, including the tunnel exit, to monitor and enforce speed limits effectively.

The 10.58-km coastal road stretches from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the BWSL. The project features multi-level interchanges at key locations, including Haji Ali, Peddar Road (Amarsons Garden), and Worli Sea Face. While the Peddar Road interchange will have four entry-exit arms, the Haji Ali interchange will have eight, and the Worli interchange will have six.
