Mumbai rains: Heavy rainfall to continue till Friday; orange alert issued

Over the last 24 hours, Mumbai witnessed widespread heavy rainfall with most places in the city crossing the 100mm mark. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), an orange alert has been declared for the next three days, during which Mumbai will continue to experience widespread rainfall with an increase in intensity on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mumbai IMD head, Jayanta Sarkar said, “In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra experienced widespread rainfall including Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. With heavy to very heavy rainfall and also extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places. The monsoon synoptics are in a favourable condition along with strong westerly winds which will lead to continuous widespread rainfall across Maharashtra for the next four days.”

“For Mumbai, we have given an orange alert for next three days, and a yellow alert for the fourth day,” he added.

According to IMD, an orange alert refers to ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ while a yellow alert represents ‘moderate to heavy rainfall’.

The IMD has also forecasted enhanced rainfall activity to continue over Konkan and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtrat till 14 July with gradual reduction thereafter.

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature recorded in Santacruz was 23.9 °C and the maximum was 29.4°C, also the relative humidity was 92%. While Colaba experienced a minimum temperature of 24.4 °C and a maximum temperature of 29.2 °C with a relative humidity of 93%.

Meanwhile, as per data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), on Tuesday, Mumbai recorded a good Air Quality Index (AQI) with an AQI of 20, while other cities like Delhi, Pune, and Ahmedabad recorded an AQI of 48, 14, and 18 respectively.

The lower the AQI value, the cleaner the air, while a higher AQI indicates a greater level of air pollution and health concerns.
