Mumbai News: Western Railway Reopens Mahim Station South Foot Over Bridge With Corrosion-Resistant Stainless Steel For Commuter Safety

Mumbai: In continuation to the efforts to provide a safe and comfortable travelling experience to the commuters, Western Railway is striving to provide additional Foot Over Bridges, Escalators as well as Lifts. These efforts will go a long way to combat the problems such as trespassing, overcrowding on bridges, etc.

In this direction, another such development is the rebuilding of a the 22 metre long Foot Over Bridge (South) at Mahim station between platform 1 & 2, which has been commissioned & thrown open for passengers.

According to Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, Vineet Abhishek, the old FOB was closed for reconstruction on 10th June, 2023, due to corrosion. In its place, a modern, high-strength stainless steel FOB has been constructed to enhance passenger safety and longevity. The rebuilt FOB is 22 meters long and 6 meters wide.

This FOB has been constructed at an approx. cost of Rs 4.27 crore, using IRS 350-grade stainless steel, ensuring durability and resistance to corrosion. The structural components of stainless still (JSL make) were fabricated at an RDSO-approved workshop in Cuttack, Odisha, and transported to the worksite in Mahim, Mumbai.

Key milestones in the construction process included the launching of the main girders on 8th -9th November, 2024, followed by the casting of the deck slab and staircase on 15th-16th March, 2025.

Western Railway remains committed to upgrading infrastructure to improve commuter safety and convenience. The reopening of the Mahim South FOB is a significant step in ensuring safety and seamless movement for passengers at Mahim station.
