Mumbai, April 2: Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Kanchi, arrived in Mumbai on April 2 on a 10-day visit, during which he will preside over two significant Jeernodharana Kumbhabhishekams in Matunga.

Traditional welcome in Mumbai

The seer was accorded a traditional welcome with Poorna Kumbham by trustees of Sri Sankara Mattham, while female devotees performed Deeparadhana upon his arrival.

Kumbhabhishekam ceremonies scheduled

The first Kumbhabhishekam will be held at Sri Sankara Mattham on April 6, followed by another at the 300-year-old Marubai Gavdevi Mandir on April 9. Kumbhabhishekam, also known as Samprokshanam, is an ancient Hindu consecration ritual traditionally performed to renew and strengthen the spiritual energy of temple deities.

Ritual significance and traditions

As per Shastras, Jeernodharana Kumbhabhishekam is observed every 12 years, reaffirming the Mahasankalpa and re-energising the deities through Prana Pratishtha. The ritual re-sanctifies the temple, with homams (fire rituals) and pujas conducted for the spiritual and overall well-being of the community.

Sri Sankara Mattham preparations and schedule

Founded in 1939, Sri Sankara Mattham will conduct its fifth Ashtabandhana Jeernodhara Maha Kumbhabhishekam on April 6 at 9 a.m. The ceremonies will be preceded by a series of rituals beginning April 2, including Ganapathy Homam, Navagraha Homams, and Yagasala poojas, culminating in the Maha Vimana Kumbhabhishekam led by the Kanchi seer. Simultaneous abhishekams will also be performed for all deities.

Marubai Gavdevi Mandir rituals planned

At Marubai Gavdevi Mandir, preparations for the third Maha Kumbhabhishekam will begin on April 3 with special yagnas and Vedic rites conducted by scholars. On April 9, the seer will perform the ritual from atop the temple, pouring sanctified water over the kumbha in a symbolic transfer of divine energy.

City-wide temple visits during stay

In addition to these ceremonies, the seer will visit several temples and institutions across the city, including Kalina Bhakta Samaj, Ram Mandir in Bangur Nagar, Sri Subramania Samaj in Chembur, SIES Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Vidyapuram, and Sri Balaji temples at Nerul and Mulund.
