Mumbai Monsoon Mayhem: Massive Road Cave-In Opens Giant Crater On LBS Marg In Bhandup Amid Heavy Rain, Traffic Disrupted | Video

Mumbai, July 4, 2026: A nearly 100 ft × 100 ft stretch of LBS Marg in Bhandup (West) caved in on Saturday afternoon amid relentless rainfall, opening up a massive crater and affecting traffic. No injuries were reported in the incident, civic officials confirmed.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the cave-in and fix responsibility for the incident.

Road Caves In During Rain

The incident occurred around 1 pm opposite the Asian Paints premises, where excavation work for an upcoming residential project was underway. Several trees and a tempo parked at the site sank into the collapsed section after the road surface suddenly gave way over the excavation pit.

Bhandup was among the worst-affected pockets as heavy rain continued to lash the city through the day. It recorded 222 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 6 pm on Saturday.

The BMC personnel from the 'S' Ward immediately rushed to the spot, barricaded the area, diverted traffic and initiated emergency restoration work. While the exact trigger of the collapse is still under investigation, officials said the incessant rainfall is believed to have worsened the structural failure.

“A private developer was carrying out excavation work for an upcoming residential building when the piling work gave way, triggering the cave-in. As a precaution, one lane of LBS Marg has been shut to traffic. The area has been fully barricaded and all work has been halted. We have informed the Building Proposal Department, which will investigate the matter and initiate appropriate action, including a stop-work notice if required,” said Samrin Sayyad, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, BMC S Ward.

Inquiry Ordered By BMC

Meanwhile, Mayor Ritu Tawde inspected the cave-in site. She said local residents had alleged that the ongoing foundation work at the construction site during heavy rain had loosened the soil, leading to the road collapse.

Tawde said a detailed inquiry would be conducted and added that despite notices issued by the local ward office, construction work had allegedly continued. "Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry," said Tawde.
