Mumbai Marks Good Friday With Devotion, Processions And Passion Plays

​Mumbai: ​Christians across Mumbai marked Good Friday with solemn prayers, processions, and dramatic enactments commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, drawing large participation from the faithful.

​At St Joseph Church in CBD Belapur, parishioners organised a “Live Walking Stations of the Cross” in the surrounding area from 6:30 am to 9:00 am. The event was led by parish priest Father Gerard Dsouza, with active involvement from youth animators and members of the parish. Ryan Banis, a cyber security professional from Vasai, portrayed the role of Jesus during the enactment.

​In another major observance, the Christi Sevak Federation (CSF) conducted its 37th annual “Live Way of the Cross” walking pilgrimage, beginning at 9:30 am from Sacred Heart Church, Santacruz (West). Presented as a Lenten musical reflection titled “Talking with Jesus”, the procession moved through Santacruz, Vakola, and Kalina, featuring participants depicting biblical scenes accompanied by hymns and prayers.

​Joseph Dias, founder of CSF, said the theme this year focused on prayers for persecuted Christians and those affected by the recently passed anti-conversion law in Maharashtra. "The intention is to offer a Christian response of prayer and denying oneself of comforts to invoke blessings and move divine providence, when human intervention and efforts fail", said Dias who added that the event would also include prayers for peace following Pope Leo XIV’s appeal in the context of the Israel–Iran conflict.

For Ryan, a 25-year-old working with a bank in Navi Mumbai, his decision to play the role of Christ was the testimony of a renewed faith. His mother, Sunita Banis, a lawyer, watching Ryan as Jesus was nothing less than miracle. "A mother's message to a son who said he would be enacting the role of Jesus.......its not the talent that should be visible but you need to get into the feel of the passion of Jesus Christ.....through prayers....he was obedient enough to pray for it," said Banis.
