Mumbai Man Booked For Fleeing Away With Diamonds Worth ₹48 Lakh From Bharat Diamond Bourse

Mumbai: The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) police have registered an FIR against Rupesh Soni after a diamond merchant, Rasik Desai, 46, lodged a complaint accusing him of fraudulently acquiring diamonds worth Rs 48 lakh and later absconding without making the promised payment.

According to reports quoting the police, the accused was introduced to Desai by a mutual acquaintance, Gyanchand, a diamond merchant-turned-broker. The alleged fraud reportedly took place in October 2024.

On October 8, 2024, Gyanchand brought Soni to Desai’s office at Bharat Diamond Bourse in BKC, introducing him as a partner in a jewellery firm looking to purchase natural diamonds worth Rs 21 lakh. Trusting Gyanchand due to past business dealings, Desai handed over the diamonds to Soni after obtaining his signature on a receipt, with Gyanchand signing as a witness, reported Hindustan Times.

The following day, Soni returned to Desai’s office and took additional diamonds worth Rs 27 lakh, again signing a receipt, with Gyanchand witnessing the transaction. Throughout this period, Gyanchand assured Desai that the full payment would be made within a week.

Victim Approached Cops After Payment Deadline Was Passed

However, after the deadline passed, no payment was received, and Soni stopped responding to Desai’s calls and messages. Realizing he had been defrauded, Desai approached the BKC police station and filed a written complaint.

After verifying the details of the case, the police registered an FIR against Soni and have launched a search to locate him, according to an officer from the BKC police station.
