Mumbai: The MIDC police have registered an FIR against former corporator Kamlesh Rai for alleged extortion. Rai is a leader of the Shinde faction. In the extortion case, he is accused of demanding a ransom of Rs35 lakh from a contractor. Subsequently, the police detained him.

According to police sources, Rai had already taken Rs.8 lakh in the first instalment. On Friday, while accepting Rs.5 lakh in the second phase, the police laid a trap and caught him red-handed. There have been previous complaints and controversial cases filed against Kamlesh Rai. He has now been detained on serious charges of extortion. Further investigation is underway, and the police are also verifying whether any other individuals were involved in the case.
