Man Jumps Off Mumbai’s Mantralaya Building, Lands On Safety Net; Visual Surfaces
The police successfully extracted the man from the situation and are investigating his motives.
A man landed on the safety net installed in Mantralaya (the administrative headquarters of the Maharashtra government in Mumbai) after reportedly jumping off the building on Tuesday.
According to officials, the individual had materials regarding a seemingly disputed property in Nashik.
The police successfully extracted the man from the situation and are investigating his motives. They noted that the materials he carried also contained the revolutionary slogan "inquilab zindabad."
This event follows the recent installation of facial recognition technology at the Mantralaya to enhance security and occurs several months after an incident where Maharashtra's then-deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal and three fellow legislators jumped from the third story in protest of a tribal classification decision. They too were caught by the safety net and rescued.
The protective netting between the first and second floors was deployed in 2018 following multiple suicide incidents—two fatal and two survived—within a brief timespan.
A 45-year-old convicted murderer, Harshal Raote, had leapt from the fifth floor after unsuccessful attempts to extend his parole. Opposition members subsequently labeled the Mantralaya a "suicide point" and advocated for tightened security protocols.
