Goregaon Police Sub-Inspector Loses ₹78,765 After Clicking Suspicious Link On Phone
A 58-year-old sub-inspector attached to Goregaon police station was allegedly duped of ₹78,765 through two unauthorised transactions from his savings account. Police said Virnodkar’s phone stopped working after he clicked a suspicious link, following which applications disappeared and data was erased. He later found fraudulent payments and filed a complaint with cybercrime officials.

Mumbai: A 58-year-old sub-inspector attached to Goregaon police station was allegedly duped of ₹78,765 through two unauthorised transactions from his savings account on August 13. The officer, Virnodkar, posted at the Bombay High Court and due to retire in a few months, discovered the fraud two days later.
Phone compromised after suspicious link
According to police, Virnodkar was at his government quarters in Bandra East around 11.15am when his phone stopped working after he allegedly clicked a suspicious link. The screen displayed “Emergency Calling”. After restarting the phone using his email ID, he found applications missing and data erased. Suspecting his phone had been compromised, he reinstalled Google Pay on August 14.

The next day, while paying at a petrol pump, he noticed his balance had fallen. He found unauthorised transactions of ₹48,765 and ₹30,000. Virnodkar reported the fraud to the 1930 cybercrime helpline and Kherwadi police, who registered an FIR. Police are tracing beneficiary accounts.
