Mumbai: Just days before Independence Day, Mumbai was put on high alert after a bomb threat email was sent to the official email ID of the city's Mayor on Friday morning, triggering an immediate security response across key installations in the city.
According to the police, the email was sent from an ID in the name of "Dennis Lang" with the subject line "Bomb Blast Mumbai Mayor Office @ 3:11 PM." The message threatened to blow up the Mayor's office, Mumbai Metro, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and several prominent schools. It also warned people against attending Independence Day celebrations, sending children to school, or travelling by Metro.
Mayor's Office, Metro, BSE And Schools Named As Targets
The email specifically mentioned the Metro corridor from Ghatkopar, Marol Naka, Andheri and Gundavali to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) as potential targets.
Following the threat, teams from the Mumbai Police, Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), and the Cyber Cell launched an extensive search operation at the Mayor's office, Metro stations, the BSE premises, and nearby schools. Sniffer dogs and advanced detection equipment were deployed to thoroughly scan the locations.
No Explosives Found, Security Heightened Across Mumbai
Officials confirmed that no suspicious object or explosive material was found during the searches. However, considering the sensitivity of the threat and the approaching Independence Day celebrations, security has been significantly tightened across Mumbai.
Police suspect the email may have been a hoax or an attempt to spread panic, but officials said no chances are being taken. The Cyber Cell is currently tracing the IP address and origin of the email as part of the ongoing investigation.
Mayor Continues Official Work Without Disruption
Despite the threat, the Mayor's office functioned normally throughout Friday. Mayor Ritu Tawde attended scheduled meetings, met visitors, and continued official work without any disruption.
Immediately after the threat was received, security at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters in Fort was intensified. Additional police personnel were deployed at all entry gates, particularly near the Mayor's office. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad conducted thorough checks inside and outside the heritage building, including political party offices.

"The police thoroughly checked the Mayor's office and the surrounding area. Nothing suspicious was found. The Mayor met visitors as usual, chaired scheduled meetings, and there was no disruption to official work. It was a regular working day," an official from the Mayor's office said.
Speaking on behalf of the Mayor, BJP leader Priti Satam said, "The Mayor will continue working as usual. All meetings, official functions, including Independence Day events, will be held as scheduled. There is no need to worry. Mumbai Police responded promptly, and we thank them for their swift action. An investigation has been launched to identify those responsible."
This is not the first time the Mayor has received such threats. Two similar threat emails were received over the past few months, both of which were later found to be hoaxes. The repeated threats have raised concerns over why Mumbai's first citizen continues to be targeted through anonymous emails.
