Mumbai: BJP's Nupur Sharma booked over remark on Prophet Muhammad
Sharma had alleged that she has been receiving death and rape threats on social media after a "so-called fact-checker" circulated a heavily edited video from one of her recent debate on a TV channel on the Gyanvapi mosque case

The echoes of Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma's derogatory remarks about Islam on a recent news channel debate were heard in Mumbai as well. An FIR was registered against her at the Pydhonie police station for hurting religious sentiments, while another complaint was also received from a Mumbai based lawyer at the Khar police station.
Sharma was part of the news debate on the Gyanvapi mosque issue, which was aired on Friday, during which she made certain comments about Islam and the Prophet Mohammed that sparked off widespread outrage in the Muslim community.
On Saturday, Mumbai resident Irfan Sheikh, who is the joint secretary of the Raza Academy's Mumbai wing, registered a complaint with the Pydhonie police.
“I received a link of the video on WhatsApp and was hurt on seeing what Sharma said about Islam and the Prophet,” Sheikh has said in his statement to the police.
Accordingly, the police have booked Sharma for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and committing acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class under the Indian Penal Code.
Meanwhile, Mumbai based lawyer Aman Parve, a practising advocate with the Bombay High Court, also submitted an application to the Nirmal Nagar police on Saturday, seeking an FIR against Sharma under similar charges.
“Nupur Sharma insulted the Holy Prophet of Islam by making wilfully false and disgusting abusive statements against Muslim religion and also made remarks on the principles of Islam. The accused did this with calculated mindset to instigate hatred between communities and to show the Muslim religion in a bad light. The accused has uttered these objectionable words on a national platform. The statements made by the accused are with the malafide intention to cause enmity and hatred between Hindu and Muslim communities,” Advocate Parwe stated in his application, a copy of which was also submitted to the office of the zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police.
