Shravana Putrada Ekadashi 2025: Know Origin, Significance, Muhurat & More

The Ekadashi fast is observed twice every month, and it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is one of the important Ekadashis that is observed during the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi (11th day of the waxing moon) in the month of Shravana (July–August). The day is especially significant for married couples, particularly those praying for the blessing of a child, especially a son, who is traditionally believed to carry on family lineage and perform last rites.

About Shravana Putrada Ekadashi

Shravan Putrada Ekadash is a significant day, especially for the devotees of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. On this auspicious day, devotees observe a fast and seek the blessings of the deities. The origin of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is rooted in the Bhavishya Purana. According to legend, King Mahijit of Mahishmati was childless and distressed. Upon seeking guidance from sages, he was advised to observe the Putrada Ekadashi fast with full devotion. After performing the vrat (fast), the king was blessed with a son. Since then, this Ekadashi came to be known as Putrada, meaning “giver of sons.”

Significance

The word Putrada translates to "giver of offspring," and the day holds great importance for couples seeking children and for parents praying for the well-being of their existing children. It is believed that observing this fast with dedication pleases Lord Vishnu, who in turn blesses devotees with progeny, prosperity, and spiritual progress. Observing this vrat is also said to bring peace, dissolve past sins, and ensure a better afterlife.

Rituals

On this auspicious day, devotees should wake up early and take a bath before Sunrise. Clean your home with Gangajal and wear neat and clean clothes. It is best to visit the Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi temple on this day to seek blessings. But if you can't visit the temple, you can worship the deity at home.

Prepare an asan and put a yellow cloth on it. Place the idols of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Offer flowers, panchamrit, bhog (kheer, fruits, and dry fruits), and recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Vishnu Stotra, Geeta, and finally perform Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi Aarti.
