One of Mumbai's oldest and most iconic railway stations, Bandra Station is all set to celebrate its 165th anniversary in July. As a beloved stop on the city’s local train network and a Grade-I heritage structure, Bandra Station isn't just a commuter hub; it’s a living testament to Mumbai's colonial past, architectural splendour, and community spirit.

To honour this milestone, Western Railway is organising a month-long cultural festival titled "Bandra Station Mahotsav", running from June 20 to July 27, 2025. This celebration will combine history, art, and public participation to pay tribute to the legacy of this timeless landmark.

As Bandra Station marks 165 years, here are some interesting facts that reveal just how iconic it is:

Started as Bandora – now Bandra

Bandra Station was referred to as Bandora at the time. It was one of the halts on the first regular suburban railway service, which began on 12 April 1867 under the BB&CI Railway (Bombay, Baroda, and Central India Railway).

Early Infrastructure

By February 1867, three key buildings had been completed for the railway at Bandora. A "meat train" service was also introduced but later discontinued in January 1879.

Bandra Station was born

The station had two platforms by 1888, and that same year, the main station building adjacent to platform 1 was completed. This year is considered the year when Bandra Station was built.

Architectural charm

The station is a charming mix of Victorian, Gothic, and vernacular architectural styles, with baroque cast iron pillars, some rusted with age, others freshly restored, symbolising the harmony between past and present.

Grade-I Heritage Status

Bandra is classified as a Grade-I heritage structure, a distinction shared with only a few other railway stations in Mumbai, including CST (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus), Churchgate (WR Headquarters), Byculla, and Reay Road stations.
