Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Amid the increasing cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India, city doctors have advised people not to panic emphasising that it is not a new virus. “HMPV is a common RNA virus that has been around for years.
It usually causes mild respiratory symptoms like cough, cold, and fever, especially during the winter,” Dr Sanjay Dixit, former Dean of MGM Medical College and community medicine expert, said.
He explains that HMPV is similar to the common cold, but it can occasionally cause more serious illnesses such as pneumonia or asthma flare-ups. “Most people recover on their own without special treatment. Hospitalizations are uncommon and occur mainly in those with underlying health conditions,” Dr Dixit added.
Similarly, Dean Dr VP Pandey also calls for precautions but not to panic. “HMPV spreads through coughing, sneezing, and contact with contaminated surfaces, primarily affecting children under five, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
Most cases are mild and severe infections are rare,” he added. As many as five cases have been reported—two each in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and one in Gujarat.
How HMPV Spreads
HMPV spreads through air droplets released from the infected individual through coughing, sneezing or even breathing. Hence the best way to prevent contracting the infection is by avoiding contact with infected individuals.
Parents must take care of the wards
Paediatrician Dr Tarun Gupta said that HMPV majorly affects infants or kids with weaker immunity. “People must take care of the wards and must visit a doctor on seeing any symptoms. There is nothing to panic but prevention is always better than cure,” he added.
Common Symptoms of HMPV
* Cough
* Fever
* Runny or stuffy nose
* Sore throat
* Wheezing
* Shortness of breath
* Rash
