Uttar Pradesh Reports First JN.1 COVID-19 Case At PGI In Lucknow

Lucknow: Four new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Lucknow, with a 60 year old man testing positive for the JN.1 variant at PGI. This is the first confirmed case of JN.1 in Uttar Pradesh this year. All detections were made through private labs as no testing is currently available at government hospitals. Community Health Centres across the city lack RT-PCR kits, and no samples have been sent for genomic sequencing since December 2024.

Additional cases include a 53 year old woman from Ashiyana, a 68 year old woman in DaliGanj, and a 20 year old youth from Gomti Nagar, each diagnosed via private facilities. No new public health advisory has been issued for Lucknow, and testing remains costly, averaging ₹700 per person.

Amid these developments, global health agencies are monitoring a new variant, currently driving infections in China. Detected in multiple countries, it is genetically linked to Omicron but has mutations that allow faster cell entry, raising concerns about higher transmissibility. The variant has now appeared in a few U.S. states through airport surveillance testing.

Experts warn that while symptoms such as sore throat, fever, and cough remain unchanged, delayed testing and poor surveillance can allow this new strain to spread unchecked. With no active genomic tracking in Lucknow, the true extent of local variant circulation remains unknown.

Healthcare experts have repeatedly cautioned that COVID-19 has not vanished. The state’s inaction, despite recurring mutations, echoes the early days of the pandemic, leaving citizens dependent on private care while the public system lags behind.
