Northeast Rains 2025: Incessant Downpour Triggers Humanitarian Crisis, Landslides Kill Nine In Assam And Arunachal

Guwahati/Ziro: Two days of relentless rainfall have unleashed a humanitarian crisis across parts of the Northeast, with landslides and flash floods claiming at least nine lives in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The worst-affected regions include Guwahati in Assam and the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.

In Guwahati, five people, including a child, died in separate landslide and flood-related incidents. In a heart-wrenching tragedy at Chapaidong in Bonda, three members of the same family — Poonam Goswami, her daughter Nilakshi Goswami, and relative Ranjita Boro — were killed after a landslide buried their home.

In Maligaon, Robin Das died after being trapped under debris from a hillside collapse near Swagat Hospital. In Datalpara, 10-year-old Deepjyoti Boro was crushed when a boundary wall collapsed onto his house. His mother and younger sister were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, two more labourers lost their lives late Thursday night after a landslide struck the Rann Poliyan Cabbage Farm near Pine Groove along the Ziro-Kamle road in the Lower Subansiri district. The incident, which occurred between 10:30 pm and 11 pm, also left two others trapped but later rescued.

Overnight rescue efforts were hampered by dense fog and heavy rain, but operations resumed at dawn, and the bodies were recovered by 10 am Friday.

These incidents highlight the growing risks faced by hill-slope dwellers and agricultural workers amid unchecked development and inadequate landslide mitigation infrastructure. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as weather warnings remain in effect.

Emergency teams have been deployed, and both states are assessing the damage while initiating relief operations.
