Former minister KT Jaleel has landed himself in trouble by describing the Pakistan-occupied part of Kashmir as ‘Azad Kashmir’, which is in contraventionof India’s declared policy that Kashmir is an integral part of India.

The ex-minister, who is not new to controversies, made the Kashmir reference in a Facebook page on his visit to Kashmir.

The post says the part of Kashmir that became part of Pakistan was known as Azad Kashmir and the Pakistan government did not have much control over the territory except currency and military. It further said Azad Kashmir once had its own military, but during the rule by President Zia Ul Haq, it became one unified army with the Pakistani forces.

Minister of state for external affairs V Muraleedharan said Jaleel’s statement amounted to treason and the government must ask for his resignation. It is a shame for the state when a person who has committed treason continues to be a member of the assembly, he added.

Kerala BJP president K Surendran said it is hardly surprising Jaleel has made the anti-India claim, given he was a former member of SIMI, a banned Muslim fundamentalist body. He pointed out the term occupied Kashmir is only used by Pakistan and India considers the whole of Pakistan as an integral part of India and parliament has passed a resolution to this effect.
