Vadodra: In a heartwarming moment during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow in Gujarat’s Vadodara on Monday, May 26, the family of Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi showered him with flower petals as a mark of respect and admiration.
The officer’s family, visibly moved by the occasion, said they were proud not only of the Prime Minister but also of their daughter’s contribution to national security.
'She Is the Nation’s Daughter Now'
Taj Mohammad and Halima Qureshi, Colonel Qureshi’s parents, joined hundreds of citizens at the packed roadshow. Speaking to PTI, Mohammad said, “It felt great. We are proud that PM Modi met us. Sofiya is the daughter of the country, she only did her duty.”
Halima Qureshi echoed the sentiment, highlighting the symbolic justice of the recent military action. “Operation Sindoor took revenge for our sisters’ sindoor,” she said, referencing the operation’s name and its broader cultural resonance.
Colonel Qureshi’s twin sister, Shyna Sunsara, was also present. Quoted by ANI, she remarked, “When your sister does something for the country, it inspires not only me but others as well. She is no longer just my sister but the country’s sister.”
Who Is Col Sofiya Qureshi?
Colonel Qureshi, who hails from Gujarat, has built a distinguished military career. In 2016, she made history as the first woman to lead an Indian Army training contingent at the ASEAN Plus multinational military exercise.
Currently commanding a strategic unit within the Corps of Signals, Qureshi gained national fame after appearing alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in the high-profile media briefing on Operation Sindoor.
The operation, a coordinated strike involving the Army, Navy, and Air Force, targeted 21 locations housing nine terrorist training facilities across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
