Bengaluru: On Wednesday, February 12, several Congress workers staged protests near the Rajajinagar and Malleswaram Mantri Mall metro stations against the steep hike in metro fares.
A Congress worker dressed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited several metro stations in the city, carrying a placard criticising the fare increase.
Have a look at the visuals of the protest here:
As per reports, the revised rates raised the minimum fare from Rs 60 to Rs 90 and the minimum balance requirement from Rs 50 to Rs 90, making Bengaluru metro the most expensive in the country.
The fare increase was implemented by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) after recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee. BMRCL is a 50:50 joint venture between the Karnataka state government and the central government.
Earlier, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged a similar demonstration to protest against the issue. While the move met with severe criticism among citizens, the BJP and Congress have been engaged in a blame game with each other.
The BJP is holding the Karnataka government responsible and Congress is blaming the Centre.
