Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has reacted strongly to the recent sexual assault allegations against Malayalam film director Ranjith Balakrishnan. The director was arrested on Tuesday night in connection with an attempted sexual assault case. He faces charges of sexual assault, outraging the modesty of a woman, use of obscene gestures, and wrongful confinement. An actress filed the case, alleging that he attempted to assault her in a private caravan on set, witnessed by several individuals. WCC acknowledged the matter, saying, "We acknowledge and salute the courage of the young actress who approached the police directly, without waiting for anyone else."

Issuing the strong statement, WCC condemned the Internal Committee (IC), questioning why it never reached out to the actress who filed the complaint against the director. They stated, "We now hear that the IC members were 'unaware' of a grave assault that happened right under their watch. This exposes how power structures in the industry have effectively muted the IC."

WCC further stated how they fought in the High Court to ensure there is an IC at every film set, yet the mechanism is not functioning. They questioned, "Is it lack of will? Lack of awareness? Or sheer indifference?" WCC further called out the POSH Act not being implemented properly, therefore making perpetrators believe they are untouchable.

WCC then acknowledged the bravery of the young actress who directly approached the police. Standing in favour of the actress, WCC wrote, "Speaking out is never easy, but every voice raised against harassment takes us a step closer to real change." WCC further recommended to implement ICs, follow POSH and prioritise the safety of the actors in the workplace.

WCC ended the post with a stronger call, saying, "WCC remains committed to structural reform, survivor support, and a future where dignity is non-negotiable."
