Shubhangi Atre Reveals Piyush Poorey's Battle With Alcoholism Led To Their Divorce: 'Even Rehab Didn't Work, Destroyed Him'
Shubhangi Atre, known for Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, addressed criticism from trolls who claimed she separated after gaining fame. She clarified that their split was due to his alcohol addiction, saying, "Even rehab didn’t work. Addiction destroyed him and affected all of us." Despite the divorce, Shubhangi stayed in touch with Piyush during his hospitalisation.

Shubhangi Atre, best known for portraying Angoori Manmohan Tiwari in the serial Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, recently opened up about her divorce from ex-husband Piyush Poorey, who passed away at 48 due to liver cirrhosis on April 18, 2025. Addressing trolls who criticised her for revealing the separation after gaining fame, she clarified that the reason for their split was Piyush's alcohol addiction, which ultimately took a toll on their lives.
The actress revealed that despite their divorce in February, she remained in constant touch with Piyush during his time in the hospital. Shubhangi also addressed the trolls, stating that it's easy for people to judge without knowing the full story. She added that their separation was the result of years of struggle, and that she left him due to his alcohol addiction.
"I tried everything I could to save my marriage, but it was beyond my control. Even sending him to rehab didn’t work. Both our families also tried their best to help him, but addiction destroyed him and affected all of us," shared Atre.
The actress revealed that she had to prioritise her daughter Ashi's well-being, which led to her decision to part ways—a choice that was not made overnight
She added, "Things started going wrong around 2018-2019, and it eventually led to the divorce in 2025. Even after our divorce, I remained in touch with Piyush and encouraged him to seek help. I also share an extremely cordial relationship with his family."
Shubhangi revealed how alcohol addiction not only destroys the person struggling with it but also impacts everyone around them, especially children, who often suffer in silence. "I feel my daughter has suffered more than I have," concluded the 44-year-old actress.
