A courtroom drama based on the theme of marital rape, where a woman is seeking justice against her husband, it often remains underreported and stigmatised due to societal misconceptions about consent within marriage. Such a storyline has the potential to shed light on important social and legal issues related to consent and domestic violence. Marital rape is a distressing form of sexual violence that occurs within the confines of a marriage or intimate partnership. The movie was written by Dilip Shukla who earlier wrote films like Damini, Ghayal, Andaz Apna Apna and others. Based on the real life story of Marital Rape Victim. “Lakeerein” is a dramatic tale of a woman's quest to seek justice and how she faces her husband and her rapist in court.

This tender subject signifies one important thing-we all need to start a discussion whether a woman is a rape victim after marriage/also we need to find out the real victim- whether it is a wife or a husband. Our legal system says even if married’ No means no’…but is the husband also a victim or he is accused all this needs to be found out authentically. In reality our legal system has changed a bit as women are taking advantage of 498 A. thus in the recent past our legal system also permits the victim whoever it may be, wife or husband, to prove themselves with authentic evidence. 

Director Durgesh Pathak has tried his best to depict this emotional drama impact fully. Kavya’s tale draws loads of impressive insights about this marital rape a topic which has remained untouched to this extent.

Court drama could have been more impressive if the dialogues were slightly well written and if edit was done on a faster note. The slow pace editing does lose its intricacies in many frames thus fails to keep the audiences glued to the celluloid. The marital rape and consent within marriage premise could have been explained in a little more elaborated way so as for people to know the legal implications through this film.

What is interesting at least with this film is that the viewer’s will also be able to discuss this subject matter and know more about it and also take it forward creating awareness? The subject is worth a watch. It also emphasises on the legal and societal hurdles that the victim of marital rape faces.

Ashutosh Rana, as usual, handles his part delicately and superbly well with his impressive arguments that leave an undying impression on the audiences. Gaurav Chopra has performed his character exuberantly. Bidita Bag as a lawyer suitably done a good job. Tia Bajpai was just fine.

Lakeerein should be especially watched at least once by  a couple in a relationship and if married as with this a discussion on this topic everyone can  have their views and  authentic views can be carried forward. This is the most burning topic of this era as many marital rape victims are facing this problem. Also those not facing are misusing it. And knowing legal intricacies is important for the victim. The Indian legal system is strong enough to punish the victim.
