The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has reportedly begun reaching out to candidates who have declared a different category in the Civil Services Examination (CSE) or Indian Forest Service (IFoS) 2026 compared to their previous attempts. The move, highlighted by a viral post from an X (formerly Twitter) user, is being seen as a significant step toward ensuring transparency and fairness in one of India’s most competitive examinations.

Candidates who appear to have changed their category—for instance, from General to OBC, SC, or ST, or vice versa have received message and email notifications from the UPSC asking them to clarify their status and provide justification by April 8, 2026.

The Message states that, "It is found from the records of earlier CSEs / IFoSEs, that you had applied under a different category(ies) vis-a-vis your declared category in CSP / IFoS 2026. An email has been sent to you on registered email ID for bringing it to your notice and needful in this regard with the opportunity to clarify your position on or before 08.04.2026. Please urgently go through the mail.

Aspirant Shares His Experience

Speaking to The Free Press Journal, an aspirant named Rohit from Kolkata shared that he had also received a similar message and email. He explained that he had initially applied to UPSC CSE under the General category in 2022 due to a lack of awareness about his eligibility for a Scheduled Caste (SC) certificate.

“Back in 2022, I appeared under the General category because my family was not fully aware of the SC certificate process, although my relatives had one,” he said. “Later, after understanding the benefits and eligibility, I applied for the certificate with the help of my relatives.”

Currently on his fifth attempt, Rohit further clarified that he switched to the SC category from 2023 onwards and has continued under the same category since then. “I have confirmed on the UPSC portal that my social category for CSE 2026 will remain the same as my recent attempts,” he added.

What Reddit Users Are Saying

The discussion has also gained traction on Reddit, where several aspirants shared their experiences after receiving similar notifications. Several users advised checking the official portal and verifying details before responding.

One user posted the full email content, which stated "You are required to confirm that the category declared in your current application for CSP / IFoS 2026 is correct and supported by valid documents/certificates…”

The email further clarified that candidates are responsible for the accuracy of their application details and that only a change to the Unreserved/General category is permitted at this stage, subject to verification by the Commission. It also warned that failure to respond by April 8, 2026, would be treated as confirmation of the category filled in the CSP / IFoS 2026 application form

Many users initially expressed concern, fearing that they had made an error or could face penalties. However, others reassured them after checking the portal:

“Got the same text and I logged in to retain. I think it’s just a confirmation mail.”

“Log in to UPSC website… there will be a pop-up to confirm/update. Nothing to worry.”

The overall sentiment on Reddit suggests that, while the notification caused some concern, most candidates now see it as a routine verification step rather than a punitive action.

Ensuring Transparency in the System

This initiative comes at a time when concerns about the misuse of reservation benefits and category claims are becoming more widely discussed. UPSC appears to be strengthening its verification mechanisms by proactively flagging such discrepancies to ensure that reservation policies are used by genuine eligible candidates.
