Mumbai: For the first time in KC Law College’s history, a Jain monk led a major conference on the ‘concept of basic structure doctrine in the contemporary era’.
About The Conference
Organised by Jyot in collaboration with the college, the event featured Jainacharya Yugbhushan Suri, the 79th successor of Tirthankar Mahavir, offering a confluence of spiritual and legal discourse. The chief guest, Justice ML Tahaliyani (former Lokayukta of Maharashtra and retired Bombay HC Judge), said, “For the first time, I have seen a spiritual leader discussing the basic structure doctrine, a complex aspect of Indian Constitutional law.”
Jainacharya emphasised that the absolute sovereignty of Parliament was never in humanity’s interest and was neither practiced in Ancient India nor endorsed in the scriptures. He cautioned against its creation, propagation, and implementation.
A Bombay HC advocate said, “Jainacharya raised a fundamental question: Is the Indian Constitution democratically democratic or undemocratically democratic?” The event saw participation from legal figures, including advocate Harihar P Chaturvedi, additional secretary, Ministry of Law and Justice; Rajan Jaykar, solicitor and advocate; and Yogendra Rajgor, advocate, Bombay HC.
