Tata Sons Board Likely To Meet On September 17

The Tata Sons board is likely to convene on September 17, with Chairman N Chandrasekaran's decision to step down at the end of his current term potentially coming up for discussion, according to a report by Moneycontrol.

Chandrasekaran announced on August 12 that he would not seek another five-year term when his current tenure ends on February 20, 2027. While the matter is not specifically listed on the agenda circulated so far, directors could discuss it during the meeting.

The board is also expected to discuss a fresh date for the Tata Sons annual general meeting, which was postponed on August 18 after the company failed to achieve the required quorum. Other routine matters are likely to be taken up as well.

It remains uncertain whether any director will formally ask Chandrasekaran to reconsider his decision or seek a vote on the issue. Such a move could highlight differences among key stakeholders on the Tata Sons board.

The board currently includes Chandrasekaran, Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata, trustee and Tata Sons non-executive director Venu Srinivasan, Saurabh Agrawal, Harish Manwani and Anita M George.

Tata Trusts' Earlier Support For Chandrasekaran

The issue could revive an earlier debate over Chandrasekaran's continuation. The two principal Tata Trusts had unanimously supported another five-year term for him in July 2025 and had also urged efforts to keep Tata Sons unlisted.

However, at a February 2026 board meeting, Noel Tata reportedly raised concerns about losses and capital allocation at certain group businesses and sought clarity on Chandrasekaran's position regarding a potential Tata Sons listing. Srinivasan was understood to have supported another term.

Tata Sons' Articles of Association require a majority of Trust-nominated directors to approve significant appointments or reappointments of the chairman and managing director.

Any fresh discussion on Chandrasekaran's tenure could therefore become a significant test of the positions held by Tata Trusts and other directors.
