Mumbai: Employees Provident Fund Organisation members can withdraw part of their retirement savings without closing their account. However, the permitted frequency depends on why the money is needed.
The latest guidance covers five reasons: illness, education, marriage, housing and special circumstances. Members completing 12 months of EPF membership may withdraw up to 75 percent of their balance, subject to conditions for the relevant category.
Medical needs carry no frequency cap
Members may seek an advance for medical treatment for themselves or eligible family members. There is no limit on how many times this facility can be used, although every claim must meet the applicable requirements.
Education and marriage have separate limits
An EPF advance for education expenses can be claimed up to 10 times across the member’s period of membership. It may cover eligible educational needs of the member or family.
For marriage expenses involving the member or eligible relatives, withdrawals are allowed up to five times during the membership period.
Housing withdrawals cover four needs
Members can use EPF savings for purchasing a house, flat or residential plot, constructing a home, repaying a housing loan, or renovating and improving an existing property.

Housing-related advances can be taken up to five times throughout EPF membership. Eligibility and the amount available may vary depending on the purpose and prescribed conditions.
Special situations get annual allowance
For special circumstances notified by the Central Board of Trustees, EPF, members may claim an advance up to twice in a financial year.
How much can members withdraw?
After 12 months of membership, the uniform ceiling is up to 75 percent of the total EPF balance. This includes the employee’s contribution, the employer’s share and accrued interest.
The 75 percent figure is a maximum, not an automatic entitlement for every application. The permissible amount and supporting conditions depend on the withdrawal category. Members should therefore check their eligibility and account details on the EPFO portal before submitting an online claim.
