Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Public transport services across Bhopal were thrown into disarray on Monday as over 30 drivers and conductors of the Bhopal City Link Limited (BCLL) city buses launched a strike demanding pending salaries and benefits.
The striking staff alleged that they haven’t received their salaries for the past five months. Gratuity and provident fund (PF) payments also remain pending. According to Satyam Sharma, one of the protesting drivers, around 250–300 employees are affected. “We’ve been left with no option but to strike. Despite repeated pleas, there’s been no resolution,” Sharma said.
The drivers have warned of an indefinite strike if their demands remain unaddressed.
As a result of the protest, bus operations on most city routes have been hit hard. Only about 40 buses are currently running, with services on at least two major routes coming to a complete standstill. While five routes were functional earlier, now, only two remain active under limited operators.
The city’s main depot has also remained shut for two months. Protesters have parked the buses inside in defiance, citing disrespectful treatment and threats of termination.
The disruption has left thousands of daily commuters, including students and office-goers, struggling for transport. With no official response from the private operator, frustration continues to mount among the public.
BMC assures of ‘necessary steps’
Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) Chairman Kishan Suryavanshi addressed the issue, assuring the media that “necessary steps will be taken soon”. He added that discussions with the operator will be held to ensure timely payment of salaries and resolution of grievances.
