MP doctors protest ends?

The 3-day long protest by the MP Medical Interns in Bhopal is likely to end once the paper formalities are completed. The official order regarding the Rs 21,500 stipend for MBBS interns is likely to be issued by this evening.

₹21,500 stipend for MBBS interns

The medical interns will now get a monthly stipend of Rs 21,500. They are currently getting only Rs 14,000 and were demanding to double it to Rs 30,000 a month, citing rising inflation.

The students could reach an agreement with the government in round 2 of talks on Wednesday afternoon. The state government also tried to pacify them on Tuesday; however, the talks failed. The students had refused to retreat and demanded a written order on their monthly stipend hike.

Gandhi Medical College interns protest

Notably, MBBS final-year students of Gandhi Medical College interns began protesting on Monday, September 7, demanding a hike in their monthly stipend. The protesting students planned to march towards CM Residence in Bhopal. They were, however, stopped by the police en route. This led to a confrontation between the MBBS interns and MP Police.

There were visuals showing police using lathi charges on the protesting youths and even firing water cannons to disperse them. Police action drew flak from the netizens and residents for manhandling medical students.

An MBBS intern was seen in an Instagram reel, sharing daily struggles. "Hum 25-26 saal ke ho gaye hai, abhi bhi apne ghar waalon se paise lene padte hai." (We are 25 to 26 years old now, living away from home. We only get a stipend of Rs 14000. It has become difficult to manage expenses in a city like Bhopal and Indore, where inflation is rising.)
